Porcelain doll manifesto
by:Katerine Sultan
Ethereal dance-light and shadow, reality and dreams, raw material.
I navigate labyrinth of cultural narratives, seeking to unveil the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface of our collective consciousness
.
In my work lies a fervent quest for liberation—a relentless pursuit of decolonization that unfolds in the delicate strokes and whispered secrets of porcelain dolls.
These silent sentinels, bearing the weight of centuries-old Eurocentric ideals and historical baggage, become vessels for transformation as I breathe new life into their timeless forms.
Through the practice of up cycling and bending, I redefine the notions of beauty, femininity, and cultural identity.
In the cacophony that surrounds us, I discover solitude—a sanctuary of voices and faces that reflect the kaleidoscopic complexity of human existence.
From the whispered tales of indigenous tribes to the silent struggles of immigrant communities, each doll becomes a mirror reflecting the rich scensse of human existence—a poem to resilience, adaptation, and spirit survival.
the dolls are suspended in a circular space capsule, reminiscent
" Within these vessels, the boundaries of reality blur, and the concept of home becomes fluid—a transient sanctuary where past, present, and future converge in a symphony of memory and imagination.
Rooted in the etymology of the word "doll," I unearth hidden truths and untold stories that transcend the boundaries of time and space.
Through my work, I seek to challenge and subvert these norms, reclaiming the doll as a symbol of empowerment and cultural resilience—a manifesto of the human soul, the ephemeral dance of light and shadow, amidst the whispers of dreams in the echoes of memory, I find my voice—a voice that resonates with the imaginary collective longing for liberation and belonging. Through the transformative power of storytelling and cultural expression
I invite viewers to join me on a labyrinth
journey of exploration
fill with depths of heritage, where the echoes of colonialism still linger, I unearth the fragments of tradition and reimagine them through the lens of rebellion.
Drawing upon the raw essence of my cultural lineage, my work emerges as a defiant manifesto—a radical departure from the shackles of conventional beauty and domesticity. As a storyteller navigating the tangled web of imagination, I weave together disparate threads of beauty.
deconstruction of the collective imaginary
challenging the viewer to confront the oppressive grip of patriarchal norms and Eurocentric standards. Through the creation of inanimate object, I breathe life into a journey of transformation, from relics of tradition into symbols of empowerment—a manifesto towards the feminine spirit.
Within these Assemblages, a powerful metaphor unfolds—the domestic sphere laid bare, its intricate web of power and control exposed to the harsh light of scrutiny. It is a profound exploration of character design, a deconstruction of a collective narrative, where traditional porcelain dolls emerge as unlikely superheroes, serving as a powerful metaphor for the domestic sphere and its relationship to broader systems of power and control.
